Did you know . . . facts about Downtown NYC
Abercrombie & Fitch
Did you know . . . that the Abercrombie & Fitch on Water Street provided President Theodore Roosevelt with equipment for his African Safari in 1908? Founded in 1892 by David T. Abercrombie, the waterfront store was dedicated to selling the highest-quality camping, fishing and hunting gear.
Fraunces Tavern Restaurant
Did you know . . . that Fraunces Tavern served as the meeting place for the Sons of Liberty, and that George Washington delivered his farewell address to his Revolutionary War officers there in 1783.
Did you know that Lower Manhattan was the site of America's first public brewery?
The Dutch colonial governor Peter Minuit established what would become America's first public brewery on the southern tip of Manhattan just seven years after purchasing the island -- soon to become New Amsterdam and, ultimately, New York City -- from Native Americans in 1626.
Did you know that Lower Manhattan's original shoreline sat where Pearl and Greenwich Streets are today?
Once dotted with coves, marshes and creeks, the landscape of Lower Manhattan was originally much narrower than it is today. The curve of Pearl Street, which is named for the pearly shells found on the shore at the time, marked the island's eastern waterfront, while Greenwich Street bordered the Hudson River to the west.
