A gift from France on America's centennial, the statue became a New York icon welcoming immigrants at the turn of the century. Her torch, raised 300 feet above New York harbour, remains a beacon of entry into the free world. Tickets for the ferry can be purchased inside Castle Clinton in Battery Park.
Brooklyn Bridge
Considered by many to be the world's most beautiful, the Brooklyn Bridge was the world's
first steel suspension bridge, and its enormous support towers were once New York's tallest
structures. Completed in 1883, it joined New York and Brooklyn - what were once separate
cities. Affording sensational views of the skyline, harbor and the bridge itself, a walk
across takes about 20 minutes. Enter across from City Hall at Centre Street.
